Dynasty reboot exec says it's the perfect soap for the Trump era

Dynasty co-creator Josh Schwartz says the 80s reboot is the perfect soap opera for Trump's America.

There couldn't be a better time for a Dynasty reboot. At least, that's what the upcoming soap's co-creator Josh Schwartz told reporters during the Television Critics Association (TCA) this week.

"We are living in an age of dynasties," the former Gossip Girl exec said. "You can't look at the news [without hearing about] Trump or the Clintons or the Kardashians or the Murdochs. Our news is filled with stories of dynasties."

However, Dynasty characters might live out their stories a bit differently than some of the aforementioned families, depending on how you look at it.

Says the soap's executive producer, Sallie Patrick, the reboot is about "a diverse family trying to get along despite their differences, which is a metaphor for this country right now."

And speaking of issues affecting the country, it turns out the modern version of Dynasty won't have the homophobic atmosphere of the original; Schwartz says family patriarch Blake Carrington (Grant Show) won't be as confrontational with his son over being gay as he will be about issues such as fracking.

But the big question on everyone's mind concerning the soap, which will be set in Atlanta instead of in Denver like the original, is whether or not scheming Alexis will be making a return. The show's execs promised that Alexis will indeed be dropping onto the canvas, but they declined to confirm whether or not original portrayer Joan Collins will be resuming the role or if they have cast someone else.

The new Dynasty stars Grant Show, Brianna Brown (ex-Lisa Niles, General Hospital), Elizabeth Gillies, James Mackay, Alan Dale, Nathalie Kelley, Sam Adegoke, Robert Christopher Riley, and Rafael de la Fuente, and will premiere on the CW on Wednesday, October 11, immediately following Riverdale at 9PM EST/PST.
